Letter sent to Daily Echo over David Irving death and trial.

I feel so sorry for David Irving's family. The outcome of the trial was probably not what they expected, but is sadly what many of us in the cycling community now know is common.

Cyclists increasingly have no protection in law. Pedestrians fair little better. I am left with only questions.

How can low sun be used as an excuse? How can a shared cycle path be so poorly signposted? So poorly protected from development? (Second Avenue's cycle provision is under revue in favour of HGV traffic.) And so stop-start and narrow?

Have any of the jury ever experienced modern cycling conditions?

The helmet and high visibility clothing, so often being used as a cure for cycling's risks, clearly didn't work here. I really would like the Police to be better prepared for such trials, from the reports it seems as if the Officers faltered under cross examination. I don't know why more wasn't made of the driver leaving the scene?

I would also dearly like the Police to work with CTC, British Cycling and Southampton Cycling Campaign to see what they can do together to minimise risk and try and ensure this never happens again.

My condolences to Mr Irving's family.
